Originally from Laurier, Manitoba, Andre spent two years at a College for priests in St. Boniface, Winnipeg, Manitoba (1953-54) where he learned to love classical music, including opera. Then back in his home town he took piano lessons under Remi Bouchard. Though he loved classical music, including opera, and was a fan of the Met Opera broadcasts from early on, his career was not in music.
He worked as a welder, studied biology at University of North Dakota, Forestry Technology at BCIT, worked as a timber cruiser for BC Ministry of Forests. In 1994 He moved to Nanaimo, where he retired.
After eight years of piano lessons with Terrie Jung, and singing lessons with Betty Allison he joined the chorus of Opera Ole in Qualicum Beach, under the directorship of Tatiana Vasilieva where he was also a member of the board. He continues to be an ardent fan of opera, attending Live in HD Met productions and Royal Opera (London) at Theatres, in Nanaimo.
Joining the Opera Nanaimo Board seems a logical step for Mari Lyn. As a professional actor and director she has created innovative and acclaimed productions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, Musical Theatre and Drama with performers of all ages in the Ottawa-Carleton, Ontario area.
With passions for both music and theatre, she studied as a voice major at Ottawa University where her love of Musical Theatre and Opera blossomed. Completing studies at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, New York in theatre, and at the Royal National Theatre, London, England in directing, she began teaching voice, dance and acting for the Ottawa School of Speech and Drama plus performing with Opera Lyra Ottawa for 13 seasons at the National Arts Centre.
Relocating to the west and returning to her first career of clinical and administrative nursing, she now satisfies both creative and nurturing passions as a Director of Care in Long-Term Care and as a Board member of Opera Nanaimo.
Tony is currently the Financial Manager for Island Crisis Care Society, and in addition to Opera Nanaimo, he serves as treasurer Hub City Cycles Community Co-Op.
